7/18/10   Lake Davis Fishing Report Courtesy of J&J's Grizzly Store and Camping Resort (530) 832-0270

Lake level is at 66.7  percent.

Average Surface water temp is about 72 degrees

Fishing is excellent.

Trolling. Wee Dick Nite Copper Red, Sockeye Slammer Fire Tiger Size 2, Needlefish Red Dot Frog. The water has warmed up on the surface, so, fish are a little deeper than last week. We checked the lake and found lots of large fish almost everywhere at a depth of 12 to 14 foot range. When trolling, we have experienced the best results, if we tie our lures directly to the line, then about 150 feet behind the boat; trolling at a speed of 1.5 to 1.9 MPH.  We used a down-rigger to get the lures to the depth that we wanted; but split shot can be used equally as well. Limits "PLUS" can be caught!

Fly fishing, Jay Fair Wiggle Tail in burnt orange or olive are still producing great results. Blood midge under an indicator, sheep creek and flashback pheasant tail have been reported as having fair results.   May flies and the flying ants are hatching and are on.  The Damsel hatch has finally started.

Bank. Powerbait in Rainbow or Nightcrawlers is still working the best.  When fishing from Grizzly to Lighting Mallard Cove, the best results are if you can keep your bait at the 10 to 12 foot range.  The bank goes quickly to a 40 foot drop and when we checked the lake yesterday we did not see an abundance of fish that were below the 14 foot range.

All access points around the lake are accessible by car. The road into Jenkins Point is being re-surfaced and it will provide a better access to this superb fishing point.

Please stop by the store and tell us how you did and what you were using so that we can share this information with your fellow anglers.

4/26/10 Almanor Fishing Report and Lake Status- Provided by Doug Neal of Almanor Fishing Adventures:

You only have to listen to marine channel 69 to know there are a bunch of happy anglers all around Almanor. While we have been successfully targeting King Salmon along the East shore, trollers are reporting good action from all points around this fast rising lake. Warm sunny days have the Green Midge hatch exploding along the east shore, and now Almanor West is just starting to go off as well. Browns, Rainbows and Salmon  have turned their attention to this abundant, and protein rich food source. And the result has been longer and stronger battles, that have everyone smiling from ear to ear, as lots of good reports continue to come in all day.
While fishing for Kings, we witnessed several hook ups as trollers pulling a variety of gear, got their nets wet time and time again. Enough of the hype, here's the details.
Surface temps are 45 to 47 degrees depending where you are, clarity has improved to about 9 ft. As most boats are coming out of Canyon Dam, trolling the east shore south toward the Dorado Inn and back has fish rising everywhere. The east shore has the most fishing pressure especially weekends. Threaded Crawlers with Pro-Cure Carp Spit, or Trophy Trout scents, rigged down 3 to 6 ft. has been simple and effective. Silver Prism Needlefish, ripping trolling flies, Speedy shiners, Rainbow Runners, Rapalas, are all taking fish. When the fish get active like they are now, it really doesn't matter what your trolling, your going to get hooked up.
Anchovy tails, that's the ticket, if your looking for big Salmon. Sure there are a few caught trolling silver Needlefish about 16 feet down, but if you want Salmon it's anchovy that gets them biting. In my last 6 outings we have had over 80 kings to 2.80 lbs. and nothing under 2.2, all on anchovy. We also had approx. another 15 to 20 get off after some terrific battles. These Salmon are the best fighters in Almanor, we had them take us around the boat several times before getting them in, and lost a couple to our own anchor rope, what a balst! You will catch more Salmon if you have some Pro-Cure Krill scent smeared on the properly presented anchovy tail. For a picture of what a properly presented anchovy tail looks like, email your request to me and I will send. Click on the "Contact Us" button on the home page.
A picture is worth a thousand words eh?
The USFS boat ramp near Prattville is open, and for those of you that want to Fish Almanor West and get away from the east shore boat traffic should launch out of there.
More weather is forecasted for this midweek, but it will be clearing out late Thursday, just in time for the weekend warriors to get some good fishing in. Watch where your going! There are some big logs drifting around out there, watch for hazards. Rising water will refloat logs and sticks that were tossed ashore during winter storms.
Both Canyon Dam, and the USFS ramps are open, plenty of parking.
In other Almanor Fishing related news:
Poachers were seen netting fish from to Almanor Fishing Associations Pen Project located in the Hamilton Branch. They approached the floating pen islands by boat and docked along side, There were 3 of them, one adult and two juveniles. They removed the top covers and netted a undetermined amount of  Rainbow Trout and promptly left before witnesses could get their CF# on the boat. If you have any information about this please call me, Doug Neal at 530-258-6732 and please don't forget, you can always report poachers to 1-888 DFG-CALTIP.
